If you’re running B2B ecommerce SEO, half the playbooks you read are for DTC. They’ll get you partial wins. This is the part that’s actually different.
1. Search intent is longer and stranger
B2B buyers research for weeks. Their queries are often spec-driven (‘1/4 inch SS304 fitting’), comparison-driven (‘X vs Y for industrial use’), or compliance-driven (‘Health Canada approved Y supplier’). Map each intent type to a specific page type.
2. Category pages with bulk-pricing context
DTC category pages merchandise; B2B category pages need to expose pricing tiers, minimum order quantities, lead times and account-application paths. Without that, buyers bounce.
3. Account-gated catalog SEO
Most B2B platforms (Shopify B2B, BigCommerce B2B Edition, Adobe Commerce) support customer-group catalogs and gated pricing. Done right, this doesn’t hurt SEO — the catalog structure is crawlable, only the prices are gated. Done wrong, it leaks crawl waste and confuses Google.
4. Spec content as ranking content
The fastest way to rank in B2B niches is to be the best documentation in the SERP. Datasheets, certifications, dimension drawings, compatibility tables — the documentation B2B buyers grade you on doubles as SEO content.
5. Lead magnets without tanking indexability
Gating content behind forms is a B2B reflex. Done right (excerpt indexed, form on the same URL), it works. Done wrong (PDF-only behind a form, no HTML version, no excerpts), Google sees nothing and you rank for nothing.
6. Long-form buyer guides and vendor comparisons
B2B buyers spend hours in long-form content. Vendor comparisons, ‘best of’ roundups, in-depth buyer guides — if you don’t write them, your competitors do.
7. Reporting that ties to revenue and pipeline
B2B leadership doesn’t care about ‘sessions’. They care about RFQs, demo requests, qualified opportunities and revenue. Build SEO reporting that ties to those metrics — ideally with attribution back to specific pages and queries.
8. The role of platform choice
