If you’re researching the best wholesale ecommerce platform for a Canadian B2B store, you’re probably between four options: Shopify Plus B2B, BigCommerce B2B Edition, Adobe Commerce, or a custom build. We’ve worked across all four. Here’s the honest picture.

1. Shopify Plus B2B

Shopify Plus added native B2B functionality in 2023 and has matured fast: customer-group catalogs, price lists, quantity rules, draft orders and account-level pricing all out of the box. For DTC brands adding a wholesale channel, it’s usually the right answer.

Strengths: fastest time-to-launch, no separate codebase from your DTC store, native Canadian payment / shipping support, strong app ecosystem.

Weaknesses: hits limits on very complex catalogs (10K+ SKUs with deep variant logic), less flexibility on URL structure for SEO.

2. BigCommerce B2B Edition

BigCommerce’s B2B Edition was built B2B-first. It includes more sophisticated B2B features out of the box (corporate accounts, sales rep impersonation, buyer roles), and is often the better fit for distributors and manufacturers with complex buyer hierarchies.

Strengths: deep B2B-first features, headless options via Catalyst, more URL / SEO flexibility than Shopify.

Weaknesses: smaller Canadian app ecosystem, fewer Canadian agencies, less DTC polish.

3. Adobe Commerce (Magento)

Adobe Commerce is enterprise B2B’s default for a reason: shared catalogs, multi-warehouse, requisition lists, RFQ workflows, complex pricing. If your B2B needs are deep, Magento can do things Shopify and BigCommerce won’t.

Strengths: deepest B2B feature set, full control of catalog logic, mature multi-store and multi-locale.

Weaknesses: longest implementation, highest TCO, performance discipline required (see our Magento SEO page).

4. Custom / Composable (commercetools, etc.)

For brands at $20M+ where the platform is part of the moat, composable commerce (commercetools + headless frontend + headless CMS) wins. Below that scale, the engineering cost rarely pays back.

How to actually choose

Three honest filters:

  • Catalog complexity — under 5K SKUs and standard pricing, Shopify Plus B2B. Above that, BigCommerce or Adobe.
  • Existing DTC? — if yes, default to Shopify Plus B2B unless catalog complexity vetoes it.
  • Engineering capacity — without a dev team, Shopify Plus is the safe bet. With one, BigCommerce or Adobe unlock more.

Whichever platform you pick, the platform doesn’t rank you. The SEO work does. See our B2B Wholesale SEO page for the technical and content work that actually moves wholesale revenue.
